How to install antiX on Oracle virtualbox

antiX is a free Debian based lightweight Linux operating system for your super old computers. You can even run antiX on 256MB old PIII systems. It comes in three versions full, base, core and net for 32 bit and 64 bit systems. Full which installs a all the applications, Base allows you to choose your own application, Core and net allows user to have total control over the install but net needs internet connection.In this Install antiX on Oracle virtualbox tutorial i am using the below software to test it.

antiX-17.4.1 Full distro (64-bit), Download antiX from here

Virtualbox 6.0.10. Download VirtualBox from here

Windows 10 (64bit) with RAM 4GB
Note: You can also use any other OS like Linux or other versions of windows.

Note: If you are using 64-bit guests, you need to enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS on your host system. Boot to your bios settings and find the virtualization or virtualization technology or hardware virtualization or VT-x or AMD-V option and Enable it. For reference see the below image.

Install Oracle VirtualBox:

First open the above Oracle VirtualBox download link. Then download and install the latest version Oracle VirtualBox from that link.

Install antiX on Oracle VirtualBox:

Open Oracle VM VirtualBox in your system and click New to create a new virtual machine in your OS.

Name your new virtual machine OS name as antiX, then choose your Virtual machine path where you want to save the virtual OS. Select Linux as Type from the drop down and select Debian(64bit) as version and click Next button. Because it is debian based linux distribution.

The minimum system requirements is 256 MB of RAM memory and 2.7 GB hard disk size. So atleast set 512 MB of RAM. Here i am using 1024MB that is 1 GB of RAM. You can set according to your system memory. After that click Next button.

Select Create a virtual hard drive now option and click Create button. And then select VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) and click Next button. After that Select Dynamically allocated and click Next.

Type any name and select location of new virtual hard drive by clicking the folder icon. And select the size. antiX can run on minimum 2.7 GB hard disk but for the smooth operations the recommended size is a minimum of 12 GB of disk space. And then click create button. It will create MX Linux virtual hard drive on your system.

Now select antiX and click the settings button. It will open the Oracle virtualbox settings window. In this window select Storage from left sidebar menu and select Empty under Controller:IDE. Then click the CD icon under CD/DVD Drive and select choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file. And browse the downloaded antiX-17.4.1 Full distro iso file that is antiX-17.4.1_x64-full.iso file. The downloaded file size is around 1GB.

In the virtualbox settings window, go to System side menu from left menu and under Motherboard tab enable the Input/Output APIC and Hardware clock with UTC time. Then click the Acceleration tab and check/enable the hardware virtualization features VT-x/AMD-V and Nested paging . Then go to the Processor tab and enable/check the PAE/NX feature and click Ok button.

After completing all the configurations, select the antiX from the left side menu and click the Start button. It will start the antiX boot menu select antiX-17.4.1 to start antiX-17.4.1 live CD. Here without installing antiX you can test its features. The default live CD username = demo, password = demo. If you want to install it, then follow the below steps.

In the live CD antiX screen desktop click the Install icon to install antiX on your virtual machine.

 

And complete the installation with the default settings or with your details and complete the installation. During the installation it will ask your timezone, user account details and root password. Then finish and reboot. That’s all the antiX successfully installed on your Oracle virtualbox.
