The Mint team just released Linux Mint 20.1 called Ulyssa. It is a long term support release which will be supported until 2025. Linux Mint is a free and open-source Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu. It comes with some new features, updated software and bug fixes. It is available with 3 desktop environments Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. All there major editions got lot of important and improvements.

How to install KDE Plasma Desktop on Linux Mint

KDE is a free and more customizable graphical desktop environment for Unix systems. Plasma is a widgets based desktop environment. KDE Plasma Desktop is the default desktop environment on many Linux distributions, such as openSUSE, Mageia, Chakra, Kubuntu, Manjaro Linux, and PCLinuxOS.

How to install KDE desktop on Linux Mint

To install KDE desktop on Linux Mint, you need to add author’s personal repository. Open terminal and run the below command. To open terminal in linux mint mate, click the Main Linux Mint Menu, then go to system tools and select Terminal or type terminal in the search field or click the Terminal icon in taskbar.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

Then type your Linux Mint password.And hit enter key confirm the installation.

Then type the below command and hit enter.

sudo apt-get update

Then you must fully upgrade the system via terminal using the below code.

sudo apt full-upgrade

After that if you want to install the latest KDE with all the feature just run the below code in  terminal. This will install the full KDE desktop with all KDE softwares.

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

If you want just the minimal package set necessary to run KDE as a desktop environment, then run the below code in terminal.

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends kubuntu-desktop

Type your Linux mint password and Type Y and press enter to confirm the installation.After the sucessful installation of KDE, logout and then select Plasma Desktop to login again using the same linux mint password.

Popular Linux distribution Linux Mint comes with Pre-build website blocking or parental control tool called Domian Blocker. It is also called as mint nanny. Using Linux Mint Domain blocker, you can block and control your kids in the computer to view a specific websites. It uses the /etc/hosts file to block outgoing traffic.

Block a website in Linux Mint using Domain blocker:

Click the Main Linux Mint Menu, then go to Administration and select Domain Blocker or type Domain Blocker in the search field to open the Domain blocker parental control tool. Type your Linux mint password.

Click the Add button and enter the website name you want to block. Then click OK.

It will add the domain in your website blocking list. just restart your pc.

Installing apache

sudo apt-get install apache2

Type your linux mint password and press enter.

How to install Wine on Linux Mint

Wine is an open source free compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on linux OS.It allows linux users to run Windows softwares on Unix-like operating systems. Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly.

Install Wine on Linux Mint

To install Wine on Linux Mint, you need to add authors’s personal repository. Open terminal and run the below command.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wine/wine-builds

Then type your ubuntu password.And hit enter key confirm the installation.
Then type the below command and hit enter,

sudo apt-get update

Then install the latest development branch version by using the below code.

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel

Type Y and confirm the installation by pressing enter.

Note: If your system is 64 bit, enable 32 bit architecture by using below code in terminal before the installation.(if you haven’t already):

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

To check the installed wine version use the below code in terminal

wine --version

How to install and run windows program

For example download notepad++ installer from notepad++ download page.

Open the downloaded folder.The default download location is Downloads folder.
Right click the downloaded .exe file. Here the file name is npp.7.1.Installer.exe

And open with Wine windows program loader and start the installation.

How to add google search option in Firefox on Linux Mint

How to change themes in Linux mint

In linux mint you can change and install new themes. The current version that is Linux Mint 18 mate comes with 14 pre installed themes. You can set any one of these as a default theme in linux mint.

To change the defaulf theme, click the main Linux Mint start menu. And select Control center.

How to install Oracle JDK 8 on Linux Mint

Linux mint 18 mate comes with open JDk 8 by default. Open JDK and Oracle JDK both have almost the same code of the classes in the Java API. But OpenJDK tends to use open libraries and Oracle JDK tends to use closed ones. And if you want to install Oracle JDK 8 on Linux Mint, please follow the below steps.

Go to Oracle JDK8 download page. And download the latest linux jdk in .tar.gz format.
Here its (32 bit) jdk-8u102-linux-i586.tar.gz

Note:change the JDK version in the command according to your jdk version.

Copy your JDK .tar.gz file to your Desktop.
