Solve and Fix Windows Update Error (0x80073701)

If your Windows update shows “Error encountered, There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later” If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:(0x80073701)” message then it means some system files are missing in your system because of a recent system crash, sudden power failure, any virus activity or some unknown reason. You can easily solve this using the below methods. But you need some good time and patience. Yes, patience!. Some below methods take a long time to finish based on your system configuration. For me it takes more than 12 hours to complete, so patience is very important.

Solve (0x80073701) Windows Update Error in Windows 10

Follow all steps and methods one by one and in the given order to fix 0x80073701 update error. First, try method 1 if not solved then only try method 2.

Method 1:

Step 1:

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the below command.

Click the Windows Search (Windows + S) and type CMD in the search bar. Right Click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator option. In the Command Prompt type the below command and hit enter key to run it.

chkdsk /f c:

Note: Here, c: is the Windows drive name, you can change the above command based on your drive name letter.

Note: If you get “Chkdsk cannot run the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)” message

Then type y and press the Enter key. And restart your computer to start chkdsk.
After successful chkdsk just restart your computer again.

Step 2:

Again open Command Prompt tool as administrator and run the below command.

sfc /scannow

Restart your computer after completion.

Step 3:

Open the cmd as administrator and run below command.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Reboot your pc after completion.

Step 4:

Now in Command Prompt run

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

start component cleanup

Again Reboot your pc after successful completion.

Now manually check the update by going to settings-> Update. Mostly this will solve your problem. If you are still having issues, then follow the below Method 2.

Method 2:

Note: This method will definitely work but you need to satisfy the below conditions.
Condition: Your Windows version must be lower than Microsoft Windows’s current latest version.

At the time of writing the current windows 10 version is 21H2 (November 2021 Update). So you need system with 21H1 or 20H2 or 2004 (20H1) or 1909 (19H2) or 1903 (19H1) or below.

First Check your Windows version by going Start -> Settings -> System -> About .

If it’s lower than the current Windows version then go to the below link and click the Update now button. It will download the Windows Update Assistant tool.

Now open and run the downloaded Windows Update Assistant tool by double clicking on it.

Now click the Update Now button. It will check, download, verify and install the update.

It will take time so keep calm and don’t shut down your system during Update. Wait till the end and it restarts several times during the update.
