How to install Pencil2D on Ubuntu – 2D hand-drawn animation Maker

Pencil2D is a free and open source hand drawn 2D animation cartoon maker for Windows, MacOS, FreeBSD and Linux. Using this you can create bitmap and vector graphics cartoons. You can switch between raster and vector workflows easily in this lightweight and easy to use 2D hand-drawn animation maker. You can export your animation in video and GIF file and you can also import sound in this software. It is released under GNU General Public License v2.0 license.

Install Pencil2D Animation on Ubuntu

You can install Pencil2D 2D hand-drawn animation maker on Ubuntu via portable AppImage format. Go to the Pencil2D download link and download the latest version of Pencil2D in .AppImage format based on your OS architecture (32bit or 64bit).

Download Pencil2D

Here the default downlaod location is Downloads folder and downloaded file name is “pencil2d-linux-amd64-0.6.4.AppImage” . The downloaded file size is around 40MB. You can change the below commands based on the your download path and file name. Open your terminal app (Ctrl+Alt+T) and move to your download path via below command.

cd Downloads

Then run the below command to make the file executable. If needed enter your ubuntu password.

sudo chmod +x ~ pencil2d-linux-amd64-0.6.4.AppImage

And finally run this command to start Pencil2D 2D hand-drawn animation Maker on Ubuntu. That’s all.

sudo ./pencil2d-linux-amd64-0.6.4.AppImage
