To install vlc media player on ubuntu 11.10

1.Open Terminal.To open terminal click the Dash home from unity launcher.And type terminal in the search field.And click Terminal

2.Type the below code in terminal and hit enter.

sudo apt-get update

Type your ubuntu password if needed and press enter.

3.And Type the below code in terminal and hit enter.

sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc

Type y and hit enter to confirm the installation.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS – 5 year support cycle

Canonical announced that support and maintenance period for ubuntu 12.04 Long Term Support (LTS) release of Ubuntu for desktop users from three years to five years. The first two years of the LTS period will provide hardware updates and Maintenance updates will continue for a further three years.

Ubuntu 12.04 is scheduled for release in April 2012.

Support for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ends in April 2013.

ubuntu 12.04 – polish, performance and predictability

Ubuntu’s founder Mark Shuttleworth says on his personal blog,

“we can focus on polish, performance and predictability. I’d like to improve the user experience around Workspaces for power users, and we’ll publish our design work for that, but I think it would be wisest for us to defer that unless we get an early and effective contribution of that code.”

“12.04 will be the first LTS to support the ARM architecture on selected ARM SoC parts.”

Ubuntu 12.04 ‘Precise Pangolin’

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that the codename for Ubuntu 12.04 will be ‘Precise Pangolin‘.Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is due for release in April 2012.
A pangolin is a mammal of the order Pholidota.Pangolins have large keratin scales covering their skin and are the only mammals with this adaptation.The name “pangolin” derives from the Malay word pengguling (“something that rolls up”).

Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform e-mail and developed by the Mozilla Foundation.

To install thunderbird 7.0 on ubuntu 11.04

1.Open the terminal and type

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-stable

hit enter and type ubuntu password.

2.Then type below command and hit enter

sudo apt-get update

3.Type below command and hit enter

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

4.Press y and hit enter to continue

5.To open Thunderbird, click Applications icon or unity dash from unity launcher. And type Thunderbird in the search applications field.And click Thunderbird mail/News.
