Canonical has launched Ubuntu 25.04, packed with new features and performance improvements. It ships with GNOME 48, bringing smoother animations via triple buffering and a refined interface. A new “Preserve Battery Health” mode helps extend laptop battery life, while the Wellbeing Panel tracks screen time.
Ubuntu now supports HDR displays out of the box and introduces “Papers” as the new default PDF reader for a faster, modern experience. The Linux 6.14 kernel powers the release, with updated toolchains for Python, Rust, Golang, .NET, OpenJDK, LLVM, and GCC.
Installation and boot processes are faster and more modular, with Dracut offered as an alternative to initramfs-tools. Networking sees a boost with support for wpa-psk-sha256 WiFi, and a new ARM64 Desktop ISO expands hardware compatibility. Geolocation now relies on BeaconDB, replacing Mozilla Location Services.
