How to install Fre:ac on Ubuntu – Free Audio Converter

Fre:ac is a free and open source audio converter and cd ripper for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, FreeBSD and Haiku. using Fre:ac you can convert files between MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, MP4, M4A, FLAC, WAV, AAC and Bonk formats. It also comes with the integrated CD ripper feature that supports CDDB and freedb online CD database for its tags. It supports multi-core CPUs, Unicode character and command line interface, playlists, cue sheets, chapters more than 40 UI languages support. it is released under the GNU General Public License.

Install Fre:ac free audio converter on Ubuntu:

Ubuntu users can install it via snap, flathub and AppImage. It looks simple but its a poerful audio converter.

Install Fre:ac via Snap:

Open your terminal app (Ctrl+Alt+T) and type the below command and press the enter key.

sudo snap install freac --beta

linux versions are still in active development. If you need to install edge nightly version then run the below command.

sudo snap install freac --edge

Then type your Ubuntu user password if needed and press the enter key to confirm the installation. It will install the latest Fre:ac free audio converter on your Ubuntu system, After the installation of Fre:ac free audio converter, click the show applications in the Ubuntu Gnome dock and type Freac in the search box and click Fre:ac to open Fre:ac free audio converter. you can also open the Fre:ac free audio converter via running the below command in terminal.

freac

Install Fre:ac via flatpak:

To install Fre:ac free audio converter via flatpak on your Ubuntu system, first you need to install and setup
flatpak on your your Ubuntu system. Please follow the below link for Flatpak installation tutorial.

How to install flatpak on ubuntu:

After the installation of flatpak in you Ubuntu, run the below command in your terminal to install the Fre:ac free audio converter.

flatpak install flathub org.freac.freac

During the installation it will ask “Do you want to install it?[Y/n]”. Type y and press the enter to start the installation. it will ask again one more time to confirm it like that. You can run Fre:ac by below command.

flatpak run org.freac.freac

Install Fre:ac via AppImage:

If you want to install Fre:ac free audio converter via AppImage portable package, you can download it from the below link.

Download Fre:ac AppImage

Right click on the downloaded .AppImage file and select Properties. Then go to the Permissions tab and check the Allow executing files as program option. Open your terminal and type the below command in the terminal and hit enter.

cd Downloads

Note: Here my default download path is Downloads folder. You can change according to yours.

Then run the below command in terminal. Here “freac-1.1-alpha-20190423-linux-amd64.AppImage” is downloaded file name.

sudo ./freac-1.1-alpha-20190423-linux-amd64.AppImage
