How to install KDE Plasma Desktop Environment and Kubuntu on Ubuntu

KDE Plasma desktop environment is one of the most popular, customizable and modern desktop environment. Three different variants of the KDE package are available to install on your Ubuntu system currently. Ubuntu also offer KDE desktop flavor and it is called Kubuntu. With Kubuntu you will get out of the box Ubuntu with KDE Plasma Desktop Environment.

Install KDE Plasma Desktop on Ubuntu

It comes with 3 different variants of the KDE package KDE Full, KDE Standard and KDE Plasma Desktop.

KDE Plasma Desktop:

This is just the minimal package and comes with just the Plasma desktop and a minimal set of KDE applications. Open the terminal application (ctrl+alt+t) and run below command to install it.

sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop

KDE Standard:

The KDE standard package comes with Plasma desktop with standard set of KDE apps. Open the terminal application (ctrl+alt+t) and run below command to install it.

sudo apt install kde-standard

KDE Full:

This is the complete KDE pack with all KDE app and complete KDE plasma desktop. Open the terminal software and run below command to install KDE Full on your Ubuntu system.

sudo apt install kde-full

Install Kubuntu Desktop:

Kubuntu is a Ubuntu flavor comes with KDE plasma. You can also install Kubuntu using below command.

sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop

During the installation, you will be prompted to configure SDDM. Select sddm from the list and press Enter.

After KDE finishes installing, log out.Then, before you log back in again, select KDE using the “Desktop Session” option in the lower left corner.
